![]() ![]() Everything is Political: Politics is at the heart of Victoria 3, and all major features should in some way tie back into the Pops and Interest Groups that form the core of the game’s politics.Diplomatic Eminence: War is a continuation of diplomacy, and everything that is achievable by war should also be achievable through diplomacy (even if that diplomacy sometimes comes at the point of a gun).Events outside your country’s borders can naturally affect your country in significant ways, but the game should never rely on war to provide the main source of enjoyment. National Gardening: Building, shaping, tweaking and evolving your nation is the first and foremost focus of the game. ![]() Now, there is going to be a lot of dev diaries going forward to dig into the mechanics of the game, but to wrap up this dev diary I want to briefly touch on the four game design pillars that we have been following when designing and building Victoria 3: Oh, and before you start speculating crazily about what is and is not in the game: No, there is no mana! Loading screen from Victoria 3 - “The Crystal Palace” ![]() Politics, Economy and Diplomacy are the three most important parts of the game - Wars are of course a part of the game (just as they were a part of the Victorian age), but Victoria 3 is *not* a wargame or a game about map painting. Our vision for Victoria 3 is to create what we call a ‘Society Sim’ - a game that is first and foremost about the internal workings of the 19th-century country that you are playing and how its society is shaped over the course of the game. Though Victoria 3 is its own game and not an iteration on Victoria 2, our ambition is to create a worthy successor that stays true to the core values of the Victoria series while using what have learned over the last decade in terms of making games more accessible - so that we can use that accessibility to build an even deeper game for old and new players alike! So what, then, is Victoria 3? I can start by telling you that it’s most definitely a proper Victoria game - namely a game with a core focus on Economy, Politics and Internal Country Management and with the iconic Victoria Pop system not just included as a core mechanic but made even deeper than in either of its predecessors. I’m Martin “Wiz” Anward, the Game Director of Victoria 3, and it’s my absolute pleasure to finally be able to reveal what I have been working on since 2018 (around the time I stepped down as Game Director of Stellaris). After all these years, and all these memes, Victoria 3 really is confirmed at last. No, this isn’t a belated April Fools joke. ![]()

![]() I use to level our robot test stands with a calibrated machinist level and then check these cheap plastic bubble levels from time to time and tossed many of them out. Say if your reticle was 3 degrees canted, would you be better off to level using the plumb line or the scope to gun method? It seems to me that depending on the type of shooting you are doing that would be the deciding factor for which method of leveling you would use if indeed you had a scope that had some serious cant to the reticle. ![]() If you level the scope to the gun as long as you were to use the center aiming point you could move the turrets as you would stay on track but if you used holdovers you would start to veer away from your inteded target(s). But as soon as you dialed the turrets any decent amount you would start to veer off your intended target(s). In this case as long as you used the holdover points and didn't touch the turrets you would be accurate. If you use a plumb line and the gun is level you now have the reticle plumb to the bore. It seems to me that if the scope to reticle cant is off an appreciable amount you will have either one or two issues: Guys, I would like to chime in here for a second. Re: using a plumb line to align the scope ![]() ![]() ![]() But the pieces that make up the show and the hope of seeing these pieces used further works as enough of a hook to keep interest. So far, Overlord is a pretty simple show without anything original. Now that there’s a sense of his power, the anticipation is now seeing how he can even be challenged. He doesn’t strain himself at all as he one shots everything, and there’s a certain satisfaction from watching him be so dominant. As a max level character with god tier abilities, he shrugs off an opponent’s ultimate skill as if it was nothing. With Gazef now anchoring how a “strong” character should perform, Momonga - now calling himself Ains - steps in and blows everything away. It’s a visceral and well-animated sequence that gives us our initial point of comparison for character strength. Overlord spends some time letting him shine as he fires off skill after skill, rampaging through enemy hordes. Gazef, the kingdom’s royal head knight, attempts to drive off the attackers single-handedly. He more than easily makes quick work of them, commenting on how little effort he needed to do so. It’s clear that there is much more for him to show off, and this anticipation is what keeps interest in these otherwise uneventful first few episodes.Įpisode four is where we finally get a semblance of battle. As knights attack a village of the Re-Estize kingdom, Momonga uses it as an opportunity to test his combat strength. The following episodes set out to establish the world outside of Nazarick, as well as the huge power gap between Momonga and everyone else. Watching Momonga struggle to maintain his ruler persona in front of them is quite amusing, especially since he sometimes breaks character for a split-second when surprised. His subjects are the formerly AI-controlled floor guardians of Nazarick, who are now all independent beings in the new world. This giant structure was also transported to the new world, and Momonga is now suddenly the sole voice of authority within it. With his guildmates, he built the Great Tomb of Nazarick as their base - a vast, multi-floored labyrinth housing some of the most powerful items and NPCs. In Yggdrasil, he was the confident and ruthless leader of the top guild called Ains Ooal Gown, full of elite players. In real life Momonga was a Japanese salaryman, with a somewhat meek and awkward yet kind and loyal personality. Momonga himself is interesting in that he, unlike other VRMMO anime protagonists, takes effort to fulfill his avatar’s role play, which is quite different from his real life personality. Watching Momonga struggle to maintain his ruler persona is quite amusing. It’s a slow but necessary start, if only to set the audience’s expectations of what kind of world Momonga has been transported to and how he’ll adapt. Some things still work like they used to in the game - such as items and magic - but others don’t, like admin tools and NPC settings. The first two episodes focus on showing how personal the game of Yggdrasil is to Momonga, and contrasting the rules of the original game with the new world’s more unrestricted setting. While it still has its moments, hopefully future seasons can really show off how expansive Overlord‘s fun can be. There’s a lot of untapped potential to be had with its characters and lore, but it feels like it’s still warming up even by the season’s end. Because of this, Ains - and the anime as a result - never really goes all out. He’s so overpowered in fact, that there’s not much of anything to challenge him. Also, Ains is absurdly powerful, as he used to be an extremely high level player from Yggdrasil. However, unlike other shows like Log Horizon and Sword Art Online, the main character Momonga - who calls himself Ains in the new world - actually welcomes his predicament and seeks to further root himself in this new life. Overlord is yet another anime in the growing sub-genre of “trapped in a VRMMO”. With nothing to go back to in his original world, he uses his immense power to spread the name of his guild, Ains Ooal Gown, in the hopes of finding other players who may also have transported over. ![]() ![]() But, with a deep love for the game, he stays logged in until the very end, when he is suddenly transported into a new world that is just like the game. Momonga was just a regular guy who plays the D-MMORPG (Dive-MMO, a VR game) Yggdrasil, until after 12 years the servers are quietly shut down. ![]() ![]() ![]() Need a quick and elegantly way show off a batch of images? We must learn to love – or at minimum respect – the parts of ourselves we have hated and despised for so long. To break it means that we must face our shadow – the aspects of ourselves that were once so undesirable or unsustainable in our early lives – and become like children again: that is, to be needy and vulnerable, to awaken our curiosity, to learn to be fully present in the now, to learn to drop our judgments, to be trusting about the future, and more concerned about finding joy than about making an impression. I have never met a client who wants to repeat this cycle for his children, nor who wants to keep living it for himself. Worse, if we have children, these “qualities” we once considered “mature and strong points” become the very qualities that will pressure our own children into repeating the painful cycle of repression(self-denial). Not having needs, not feeling the right to be vulnerable, compulsively needing to take care of other adults, not being able to enjoy the moment, not being able to stop worrying about money or impressing others, not being able to drop our judgments and see clearly – all of these things kill the joy of being, and they certainly don’t offer to negotiate us anything very positive in our adult lives. Though we may have believed we succeeded in the short term, escaping and destroying are never positive long-term solutions.Īnd if this false negotiation “gets us through” our childhood, it certainly becomes a big albatross around our neck as adults. But to the extent that we believed as children that our “childish” aspects were unwelcome in our world (or, that only “adult” aspects were valued), that is the extent to which we disowned those “childish” parts of ourselves and tried, unsuccessfully, to escape or destroy them. ![]() Being a child necessarily means being weak, vulnerable, and needy, and it also means being curious, non-judgmental, non-“accomplishing”, fully present in the now, unconcerned about the future, money, and economic growth, and impressing the world. Miller eloquently demonstrated that just because we decide (or are forced) to be “mini-adults” as children does not mean we cut our “childishness” out of ourselves like an unwanted part, a piece of trash, or some sort of disease. Years ago, I discovered the work of Alice Miller, a Swiss psychologist who eloquently treated this very point in her seminal works, including The Body Never Lies, The Truth Will Set You Free, and The Drama of the Gifted Child. ![]() It is said that nothing is forgotten, and I do believe this is true. ![]() These are nice people, they want to succeed, they want to be good parents, they want to be kind and do meaningful work in the world, but they self-sabotage in spite of their efforts, and they often find themselves turning in painful circles. C lients often come to me indirectly because, for one reason or another – death, illness, addiction in the family, neglect, abuse, or other acute or sustained trauma, however major or minor – their childhoods weren’t really childhoods, and now as adults they are fighting every day against the unrecognizable shadow of the child who has remained stuck in them, unable to move or express himself fully, and still feeling guilty and ashamed about the very aspects that make them as adults, well, childish. ![]() ![]() ![]() I’ve got a collection of old National and silver amps and Supertones and there’s a spot in my collection just waiting for the day I find that old Gibson amp.“I have been visiting friends and showing them my photos from the Piemonte tour. But somebody somewhere in Southern Ontario has that old Gibson amp and now all I do is buy little old amps like 10-watt amps like that. Because I didn’t know much about anything, I traded this beautiful Gibson for this Solid State amp and then I ended up obviously getting rid of the Marshall and got a JCM 800.Īnd as I got older, I started learning more about it all. Now, the Marshall I got was just a Valve State or Solid State. ![]() And as I got a little bit older, I just really wanted a Marshall. So I had this Fender Prodigy and I was running it through this beautiful Gibson amp and just had no idea what I was doing, with like a Boss DS-1, trying to learn Alice In Chains songs. It had a Humbucker in the bridge and then two single coils, but a little more of a smaller body. It was sort of like a smaller version of a Strat, almost like a Squier but it was a Fender American-made and I think they were trying to make the Strat a little more rock. We’re probably talking like a ’40s or ’50s Gibson amp and he just had it in his basement and he’s like, ‘You’re starting to play guitar, you can use this.’Īnd I’m just like, ‘Oh great, it’s an amp and it turns on.’ And my father had got me a Fender, it was actually a Fender Prodigy, I don’t know if you remember those, they only made them for a couple years. It must’ve been like a Skylark or something like that. When I was really young and I started playing guitar - I’m probably 12 or 13 years old - I had an uncle who also played guitar and he gave me what I didn’t realise at the time was an old Gibson amplifier. I actually have a sad story about my first rig. There’s certain guitars that I’ve either seen or really wanted to be able to play and just haven’t felt comfortable in my hands.īut for me, I like old, beat-up guitars because in my head I feel like I’m just one person in a long list of people who’ll be able to try to wrestle some stories out of it. I’ve got really small hands and that comes into play a lot. ![]() I’ve got little hands, which is another thing. I think I’d look stupid with one, you know?Īnd that’s happened a couple times where I’ve gotten something and it just didn’t really feel right and I got rid of it, but for me, it’s just got to feel right. Like, as much as I’d like to play a Flying V, I don’t think I could. Or maybe I can’t pull it off in what I like to call the mirror test. Like, I’ve done this a lot, I’ll see a guitar on the wall and it’ll be, say, something I’ve been looking at or thought that I really wanted and I’ll buy it and I’ll get it and it just doesn’t feel right. There’s different things that attract me to a guitar. So I would bring that and then I’d have to bring a Boss Tuner, because I know it’s not fancy but it’s integral to every touring guitarist’s life. I took two tubes out and ran it a little quiet and again, to me it’s the best sounding amp I’ve ever heard. And I actually recently turned it down to 50 watts. I guess I have to bring an amp too, right? Well, there’s a local from my hometown near St Catherine’s, Ontario named Glen Morris, who started off as a Fender amp mechanic and then started building his own amps.īack in the mid-2000s, I got him to build me a custom head and it’s basically like a 100-watt Master Volume JMP, but with a couple different mods to it. I don’t even really know if it has an actual name, because it’s a custom amalgamation. It’s kind of a Dreadnought body, but it has a 12-fret neck with a slotted headstock. I’m also very, very lucky to have a partnership with Martin guitars and they built me a custom acoustic guitar two years ago right before I started my last touring cycle and it’s sort of a hybrid of a couple of different shapes and styles in a way. ![]() It’s beat to hell, the neck has got that really beautiful, worn-in, 80-year-old guitar kind of vibe. I’m not much of a collector in the regard that I need it to be all stock and pristine. In my head it’s the best Jazzmaster that exists in the world. I’ve got this 1963 Fender Jazzmaster that I’ve had for about three years, maybe four. I used to tour in a small car and I’m very proud that I did do that, but I’m glad I don’t have to do it anymore My essentials? I would bring an acoustic guitar and an electric guitar, because I play both. We recently caught up with Dallas Green to find out how the singer, songwriter, and guitarist crafted a sound that’s bestowed him with legions of fans around the world and what guitar gear he simply can’t live without. The band will be promoting their latest album, If I Should Go Before You, recorded at Nashville’s Blackbird Studios, which they unveiled last year to a Number 5 debut on the ARIA Album Chart. ![]() ![]() Resting platelets maintain active calcium efflux via a cyclic AMP-activated calcium pump. More accurate biophysical models of the platelet surface morphology, which model its shape from first principles, make it possible to obtain a more realistic platelet geometry in a calm and activated state. This approximation is often used to model the hydrodynamic and optical properties of a platelet population, as well as to restore the geometric parameters of individual measured platelets by flow cytometry. In a first approximation, the platelet shape can be considered similar to oblate spheroids, with a semiaxis ratio of 2 to 8. Activated platelets have cell membrane projections covering their surface. Some would add the subsequent retraction and platelet inhibition as fourth and fifth steps to the completion of the process and still others would add a sixth step, wound repair. ![]() These processes may overlap: the spectrum is from a predominantly platelet plug, or "white clot" to a predominantly fibrin, or "red clot" or the more typical mixture. Formation of this platelet plug (primary hemostasis) is associated with activation of the coagulation cascade, with resultant fibrin deposition and linking (secondary hemostasis). Third, they connect to each other through receptor bridges: aggregation. Second, they change shape, turn on receptors and secrete chemical messengers: activation. First, platelets attach to substances outside the interrupted endothelium: adhesion. They gather at the site and, unless the interruption is physically too large, they plug the hole. One major function of platelets is to contribute to hemostasis: the process of stopping bleeding at the site of interrupted endothelium. The platelets congregate around the wound in order to create a cap to stop blood flow out of the tissue. As more platelets gather around the opening, they produce more ligands to amplify the response. The ligands, denoted by letter L, signal for platelets (P) to migrate towards the wound (Site A). ![]() |
